Virology Overview

 

 

Virology centers on the study of virions, virus-like agents, virus, microbiology and infectious disease. Special attention is given to understand the virus structure, evolution, infection pathways, reproduction in host cells, physiology and immunity in the host organisms, diseases caused by viruses, techniques to isolate and culture them, and their use in research and therapy. Rockland produces a range of antibodies for detection of viruses.


Rockland has developed a number of antibodies for Virology research. Several monoclonal antibodies to H5N1, also known as A(H5N1) or simply H5N1, which is a subtype of Influenza A have been generated. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 3C-like protease (SARS-CoV 3CLpro) is a relatively new identified type of coronavirus. SARS-CoV antibodies are also available.

 

Our reagents are tested in numerous applications to perform as specified, delivering the highest quality tools for innovative research. Rockland’s virology antibodies yield reproducible results and lead to significant advances in the field.

Featured Antibodies

 

 Immunofluorescence microscopy using Rockland's anti-SARS-CoV Membrane protein antibody, 6-h post infection Vero-E6 cells.  For detection Cy3 conjugated Goat-anti-Rabbit IgG MX (611-104-122) was used.  Personal Communication, Eric Snijder, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, Netherlands.

Rockland produces kits to meet the requirements of researchers for highly sensitive chemiluminescence and other antibody based assays.

Immunofluorescence microscopy using Rockland Immunochemical's anti-MHV-A59 nsp9 antibody, 6-h post infection in mouse L cells.  Cells were fixed in 3% para-formaldehyde. Virus and Virions

 

 

A virus is an infectious agent that introduces its genetic material into a host cell or organism and directs the production of the building block of new virus particles (also called virion). The genetic material of a virus can be DNA or RNA. The production of virus particles and assembly of virions takes over the host’s function. Virions consist of the following parts: the genetic material (or core), a protein coat (or capsid) and in some cases a lipid envelope. The core confers infectivity, and the capsid provides specificity to the virus. Upon assembly the virion exits the host cell and transports its genetic material to a new host cell or organism. This process is called lytic phase. Some viruses may remain dormant inside host cells for long periods, causing no obvious change in their host cells (lysogenic phase). When a dormant virus is stimulated, it enters the lytic phase.

Virions can infect all types of life forms, from animals and plants to bacteria and archaea.
