Red Blood Cells such as Sheep Red Blood Cells ShRBC or Washed Chicken Red Blood Cells and other red blood cell reagents are derived from whole blood which is aseptically collected and prepared to order from our colony of animals. These cell suspensions provide the researcher with red blood cell products that are useful for the titration of complement, absorption procedures, testing for agglutinins such as hemagglutination, the Coombs test and blood typing. We produce high quality plasma and red blood cells for research use only.
One of Rockland’s key areas of blood product development is Sheep Red Blood Cells (SHRBCs or Sheep RBCs). Sheep RBCs are used for a variety of research, but one of the most common uses is in Erythrocyte rosetting or E-rosetting. E-rosetting is when red blood cells are arranged around a central cell to form a cluster that looks like a flower as a result of an immunological reaction between an epitope on the central cell’s surface and a receptor or antibody on the surrounding red blood cells.
E-rosetting assists in the identification of T cells, binding CD2 surface proteins to a sugar based LFA-3 homologue on the surface of a sheep red blood cell. Because the LFA-3 homologue is only present on the surface of sheep red blood cells other species of red blood cells cannot be used in this type of rosetting.
Chicken Red Blood Cells are used for a variety of different tests, one of which is the Rosette test performed on postpartum maternal blood to estimate the volume of fetal-maternal hemorrhage. This is especially important in the case of an Rh negative mother and an Rh positive child as this estimates the required amount of Rho(D) immune globulin to administer. The test is recommended for Rh negative mothers within 72 hours of giving birth to an Rh-positive infant. Other chicken red blood cell tests include EA-Rosetting and EAC-Rosetting.
Processing red blood cells into various types of medicines or products is a highly specialized process because blood products and biological technologies are inherently variable due to the nature of the source materials as well as the methods used to test them. Rockland strives to produce red blood cell products from a variety of different animal species that demonstrate quality, safety and repeatable results.
Researchers using our products depend on consistency and safety, which is why Rockland focuses significant time and resources on constructing world class manufacturing processes. Each component used in our manufacturing process is developed within our own facilities, ensuring that each step of the process can be certified and verified multiple times. Our goal is to provide accountability and repeatable test results with each product we develop.
