Aß is formed after successive cleavage of the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) by -site APP-cleaving enzyme (BACE) and the -secretase complex. APP can be cleaved by the proteolytic enzymes α-, β- and γ-secretase; Aβ protein is generated by successive action of the β and γ secretases. The -secretase cleavage occurs in the middle of the membrane and liberates amyloid -protein (A) and the APP intracellular domain (AICD) . The γ secretase, which produces the C-terminal end of the Aβ peptide, cleaves within the transmembrane region of APP and can generate a number of isoforms of 36-43 amino acid residues in length.
Beta-amyloid is a peptide, 36 to 43 amino acids in length, derived from sequential enzymatic cleavage of its amyloid precursor protein (APP) - a trans-membrane glycoprotein. Aß is predominately known to be associated with neurodegenerative Alzheimer's disease, contributing to the elevated formation of amyloid plaques or insoluble fibrous deposits (amyloidosis) distributed in the brain of patients diagnosed with the disease. Besides its identified role in the onset of Alzheimer's disease, several non-disease-related functions of Aß have been characterized such as the activation of kinases, protection against oxidative anti-microbial activity; making it one of the most investigated molecules in research.

Isoforms of the 36 to 43 amino acid Aß peptide are known, of which the Aß40 and Aß42 peptides have been identified to be the most common. Aß42 although not as ubiquitous as Aß40, has been classified to be more fibrillogenic and has thus been predominately associated jwith disease states.
In conjunction to the anti-Aß antibodies, Rockland offers a unique array of Aß peptides encompassing both the full length Aß40 and Aß42 isoforms inclusive of known mutations. Various Aß peptide fragments in truncated form are among the compiliation of peptides designed to aid investigations into biological function of the Aß peptide.
